LOA  certification

LOA is a mandatory certification in South Africa, and products exported to South Africa must obtain an LOA certificate in order to clear customs.

Brief introduction

On August 18, 2003, the South African Government Gazette 25306 issued official notices R1164 and R1165 announcing special requirements for medium and low voltage power cables. On February 6, 2009, the South African Government Gazette 31844 issued an official notice R89 regarding mandatory safety standards for electronic and electrical products. All manufacturers and exporters of products listed on the mandatory list must have an LOA certificate to enter the South African market.

Partial mandatory standards

a) SANS IEC 60335- Safety requirements for household appliances such as kettles, irons, stoves, refrigerators, commercial catering equipment, etc

b) SANS IEC 60065- Safety requirements for audiovisual equipment and similar electronic devices, such as televisions, video recorders, high fidelity, radios, etc

c) SANS IEC 61029- Safety requirements for mobile electric tools, such as circular saws, grinders, etc

d) SANS IEC 60745- Safety requirements for handheld electric tools, such as drills, grinders, etc

e) SANS IEC 60598- Safety requirements for general purpose fixed lighting fixtures, including power factor in SANS475 performance requirements

f) SANS IEC 60950- Safety requirements for information technology equipment and related devices, such as computers, printers, copiers, etc

g) VC8075- Mandatory specification for extruded solid electrolyte insulated power cables (300/500V to 1900/3300V) for fixed installation

h) VC8077- Mandatory provisions for safety of medium voltage wires and cables

i) VC8043- Mandatory Safety Specification for Incandescent Lamps

The validity period of LOA is 3 years. Reapply for LOA certificate after 3 days

The following documents are provided for LOA certification:

1. IEC test report or CB test report

2. English user manual for the product;

3. English label of the product;

4. Circuit diagrams, material lists, transformer specifications, etc;

5. List of key components;

6. Information on local agents/importers in South Africa;

7. Application forms, authorization letters, etc.
